چکیده

In this study, the global surface divergent eddy heat flux (EHF) is estimated using remote sensing observations of sea height (SSH) and temperature (SST) over two decades (1993–2017). These results are used as a metric to assess model fidelity in mesoscale eddy-resolving version Community Earth System Model. The EHFs show that midlatitudes significantly contribute poleward transport because strong regional variability SSH SST. Eddy-mixed layer interactions in the ocean

Numerical models have become essential tools in the study and prediction of natural climate variability and anthropogenic climate change. However the skill of such models in simulating the observed climate variability is still severely limited by (1) numerical approximations in the discretization of the hydrodynamical equations and (2) imperfect parameterizations of the myriad of atmospheric an...

Mixed layer lateral eddy fluxes mediated by air-sea interaction

The modulation of air-sea heat fluxes by geostrophic eddies due to the stirring of temperature at the sea surface is discussed and quantified. It is argued that the damping of eddy temperature variance by such air-sea fluxes enhances the dissipation of surface temperature fields. Depending on the timescale of damping relative to that of the eddying motions, surface eddy diffusivities can be sig...

Mixing, heat fluxes and heat content evolution of the Arctic Ocean mixed layer

A comprehensive measurement program was conducted during 16 days of a 3 week long ice pack drift, from 15 August to 1 September 2008 in the central Amundsen Basin, Arctic Ocean. The data, sampled as part of the Arctic Summer Cloud Ocean Study (ASCOS), included upper ocean stratification, mixing and heat transfer as well as transmittance solar radiation through the ice. The observations give ins...

Two-layer baroclinic eddy heat fluxes: zonal flows and energy balance

The eddy heat flux generated by statistically equilibrated baroclinic turbulence supported on a uniform, horizontal temperature gradient is examined using a two-layer β-plane quasigeostrophic model. The dependence of the eddy diffusivity of temperature, Dτ , on external parameters such as β, bottom friction κ, the deformation radius λ and the velocity jump 2U is provided by numerical simulation...

Barotropic Impacts of Surface Friction on Eddy Kinetic Energy and Momentum Fluxes: An Alternative to the Barotropic Governor

As the surface drag is increased in a comprehensive general circulation model (GCM), the upper-level zonal winds decrease and eddy momentum flux convergence into the jet core increases. Globally averaged eddy kinetic energy decreases, a response that is inconsistent with the conventional barotropic governor mechanism whereby decreased barotropic shears encourage baroclinic wave growth. As the c...
